If you’re looking for a regular activity for your youngsters that combines fun and fitness, then My Gym is definitely worth considering. My Gym calls itself the Children’s Fitness Center and offers classes and programs full of exercise and fun for children. Instructors lead kids through fun playground-like activities as well as organized stretching and exercises. You can read about the specific offerings at My Gym here.
The interior is essentially made of a waiting and viewing area for parents and a carpeted area full of equipment and objects for play. You’ll notice similar elements to some playgrounds such as ladders, slides and even a ball pit. Other elements include a rock climbing wall, a balance beam and a trampoline. During the sessions, the instructors will often bring out additional gear for specific fun such as stilts to walk on and even a harness for a zip line that hooks into the ceiling.
The best part of the My Gym experience is likely the staff. They are very engaging with children. They are helpful, playful and call children by their names directly. The staff keep each session organized while letting the kids have fun. It’s very well done.
The one criticism I would have would be the payment plan. After asking questions and hearing explanation for several minutes, I’m still not quite sure how it works. You pay for a membership, but then also pay for each session. And, oddly, you have to use the sessions in consecutive weeks. This all assumes I understood the staff person correctly. We would likely attend My Gym once a month or once every two months, but it seems they’re trying to push people to attend in consecutive weeks for a month or two. For most families, I can’t imagine that’s a realistic scenario.
I would suggest they either offer a monthly membership fee where you can come as often as you want, or allow families to pay per class without a membership. The good news is that they will often let you attend as a guest with no charge in order to try it out.
The other challenge of My Gym is that they have strict age restrictions for each class. When my wife and I brought our two year old and four year old, they couldn’t be in the same class. The reasoning is valid, of course, as they don’t allow big kids to play while smaller kids are present and vice versa; however, it makes it difficult to head over to My Gym unless you’re only bringing one child. Otherwise, one child will have to wait an hour or so for a subsequent session.
My Gym is a great family atmosphere. It’s clean and ideal for rainy days when the kids need to spend some energy. Kids love the fun activity and the staff are great. I would strongly encourage families to give it a try.
